Transylvania
is Romania’s greatest tourism
asset. Evoking visions inspired
by the legend of Dracula, the region
offers numerous medieval villages,
skiing in
the resorts of Poiana Brasov and
Sinaia and a culture
rich with traditional customs and
festivals. Key cities include:
- Cluj-Napoca -
the capital and economic centre
of the region.
Home to 6 state funded universities,
the city is a young and vibrant.
The local infrastructure is undergoing
major improvement with the Bors
- Cluj-Napoca - Brasov motorway
project eventually to link the
Atlantic Ocean to the Black Sea.
- Oradea – a small city,
it is famous for its large open
spaces
and wide boulevards.
- Sighisoara – a fascinating
city - the last inhabited medieval
citadel in Eastern Europe.
Built in 1280, many of the original
towers
and fortifications are still
standing.
- Sibiu - a delightful town,
with cobbled streets and pastel
coloured
houses. Selected as the 2007
European Capital of Culture,
the city is
currently undergoing enormous
gentrification.
The
region offers a temperate climate.
Summer temperatures average
in the low 70s with sub-zero temperatures
in the winter.
Transylvania provides 3 airports
with direct flights available from
Germany, Austria, Italy and Hungary.
To improve connections into Transylvania,
Brasov airport
is in the process of being extended
to cater for
civilian traffic. The extension
is due to be completed in 2008.
