Polis
(Polis Chrysochous) is the fourth
largest municipality of the Paphos
area. Located about 36 kilometers
north of Paphos city and overlooking
the beautiful Chrysochou Bay, beautiful
beaches and picturesque villages can be found throughout the surrounding
region. Polis is the least developed
beach resort in the South of Cyprus
and is the perfect base to explore
the varied landscapes of the largely
unspoiled western region of Cyprus.
Across the Chrysochou Bay to the
Akamas Peninsula, outdoor enthusiasts
will find a nature conservation
area complete with hiking trails
in an area full of mythological
legends.
Often associated with its larger
neighbour of Polis, nearby Latchi is a serene fishing village on
Cyprus’ north western coast
approximately 3 km from Polis and
36 km from Paphos. Latchi stretches
along 3km of coastline with a sand/shingle
beach and a number of good hotels,
fish tavernas (famous island wide),
bars and cafés all lining
the harbour. The Latchi fishing
harbour (now featuring a new, enlarged
capacity Marina) is the favourite
spot on the island for those in
the know.
Thanks to its position in the
eastern Mediterranean, Cyprus enjoys
a mild climate year round but April/May
and September/October are the best
times to visit due to the optimal
weather, smaller crowds and generally
lower prices. Hiking is optimal
during these periods, especially
in the spring when the countryside
is washed in color.
For some serious
exploring of the mountain villages,
countryside and remote hiking trails,
it is advisable to rent a car.
Scooter or motorcycle rentals are
available to putt along the coast
to Akamas and other seaside villages. Akamas Peninsula is
an undeveloped finger of land jutting
into the
Mediterranean and a true gem containing
a network of nature trails and
the Bath of Aphrodite. Tour operators
in Polis and Latchi offer both
jeep safaris and boat trips to
the Akamas Peninsula so visitors
can enjoy the area's diverse flora
and fauna. While touring the peninsula,
don’t miss Kathikas, a quaint
village in the Akamas Heights that
offers a visitors centre, local
crafts, produce and authentic taverns.
