Called
Kition in times past, Larnaca is
noted as the birthplace of the
philosopher Zeno. Also Lazarus
decided to settle here becoming
Larnaca's first bishop, and then
later its patron saint. Modern
Larnaca, like other Cypriot coastal
towns, is divided into an older
city center and a wide sprawl of
newer hotels and restaurants along
the beach. Described as a lively
resort with a laid back Mediterranean
atmosphere, Larnaca is suitable
for couples and families, and provides
a good base to explore most of
the island. With an established
infrastructure and well appointed
shopping centre in the main town,
Larnaca’s numerous facilities
make it a popular tourist resort
area.
Larnaca’s sea front is lined
with tavernas, restaurants and
bars and its promenade is a reminder
of the nearby continental influences.
The tree-lined Larnaca Promenade
(Phinikoudes) is an attractive
and popular meeting place for tourists
and Cypriots alike. Situated at
the end of the promenade is the
resort’s world class marina
which is popular with yachtsmen
from all over. The western end
of town boasts a 17th century fort.
To the east of town a new tourist
area has been developed with sandy
beach and a full range of water
sports available. Just outside
Larnaca try McKenzie Beach, well
known for its beautiful white sandy
beach and clear cool waters. A
short excursion out of town towards
Limassol takes you into the verdant
foothills of the Troodos Mountains,
while along the coast to the east
the glamorous night-life of Ayia
Napa awaits. Be sure not to miss
the nearby village of Lefkara,
famous for its lace and silverware.
