Malindi is one of the most popular
tourist destinations along the
coast. Situated 60 miles (40km)
north of Mombassa it boasts terrific
surfing conditions, a large beach
and modern golf courses. Though
many are attracted to the area
for its dazzling white sandy beaches,
there are also some excellent fishing
excursions to be found in search
of barracuda, tuna and marlin.
To the north is Lamu, an island
town which dates back to the 10th
century and which has become the
cultural centre along the coast
being home to a number of notable
museums.
The Bamburi
Nature Trail is a
private wildlife and forest conservation
sanctuary. There has been a tremendous
and successful effort to reclaim
land from excavated quarries, transforming
them into an oasis of flora and
fauna. Wildlife can be seen such
as giant tortoises, buffalo and
hippo.
The Kisite & Mpunguti Marine
National Reserve is famous for
its enormous coral caves where
slaves were once housed before
shipment to Zanzibar or Pemba.
Today, the Reserve is renowned
for perfect diving and snorkeling
conditions and termed locally as "the
garden under the sea".
The Malindi/Watamu
Marine National Reserve also provides divers with
the opportunity to enjoy the wonders
of the Indian Ocean.
Mombassa is a busy city – outside
its center lie a number of sandy
beaches including Nyali, Bamburi,
Shanzu, Kikambala and Vipingo.
To the south lies Simba Hills,
a reserve of grassland and tropical
rain forest, home to elephants
and leopards.
