ALGARVE
The Algarve is located at the southern tip
of Portugal providing over 150 km of sandy coastline. Average temperatures
in the summer top 80 °F. Summer is very popular with tourists but it is
possible to escape from the crowds even in popular towns such as Albufeira
and Portimão. The Algarve interior also provides relaxed towns among
the mountains and valleys. The Algarve is also home to more than 30 of Portugal’s
60+ golf courses.
Flights are commonplace to the
international airport at Faro.
Discount airlines Easyjet, Ryanair
and Monarch all fly to the Algarve.
LISBON REGION
Lisbon possesses over 20 centuries of history. Sprawling along the right bank
of the enormous Tagus estuary, Lisbon is positioned proudly towards the Atlantic
Ocean. Lisbon is a city that comes alive at night with the sound of fado
singing and guitar-playing. Inland, many mediaeval towns and monasteries
have been classified as world heritage.

MADEIRA
ISLANDS
The Madeira Islands are located
in the Atlantic Ocean due west of Morroco and north of the Canary Islands.
Two thirds of the island is a protected area offering unique landscapes. The
geographical position and the gulfstream provide a mild climate where temperatures
never fall under 16 °C. The sea is the main supplier for the kitchen of
Madeira with delicious sea fruits, juicy tuna and the island specialty, the
black sword- fish (espada).

PORTO REGION
Porto (Oporto) is the main city of northern Portugal but still presents a riverside
community feel. With a rich architectural history, the historic centre of
Porto has been granted UNESCO World Heritage status. The Porto
Region is most famous for its wine and the array of summer festivals
held mostly during the summertime. Summer temperatures average more than
70 °F.

daily trains run between Lisbon
and Paris, Madrid and Porto-Vigo
SILVER COAST
The Silver Coast is perched
between Porto and Lisbon. The region consists of many quaint fishing towns
and villages including Nazare which provides a stunning beach combined with
traditional ‘fishermen houses’ and steep cliffs over a bright blue
sea. Other joys include the terrific local cuisine from the caldeirada à Nazarena
(a rich stew with several types of fish) to grilled sardines, rock-bass, turbot,
lobsters, prawns and spider-crabs.
Fly to Porto and follow the A1
south. Driving from England, the
quickest route is via the Plymouth-Santander
or Portsmouth-Bilbao ferries to
northern Spain and then on to Portugal.
