Quartucciu is a small town of about 13000 inhabitants in the metropolitan area of Cagliari. Its territory covers from the Stagno Molentargius to the mountains of the Sette Fratelli, and is divided into two parts: the township and the village of S. Isidoro, about 10 Km., where there were the estates of the landowners. These two areas are geologically different: one is made up of clay soils of marsh origin, the other has a sandy matrix of marine origin.
Its name dates back to Roman times. "Quartoto or Suso", to distinguish it from the other villas that were located at the same distance, is the distance from Carales (Cagliari): "Quarto ab urbe lapide".
There are numerous findings dating back to the Punic, Roman, and Medieval ages. Among the prehistoric sites the nuraghi prevail, scattered in the countryside of S. Isidoro, near which we also find the Tomb of the Giants (Sa Domu 'e S'Orcu) a majestic megalithic nuragic monument .
In the town centre there are different types of houses: in addition to the newer buildings and townhouses, we still find campidanese houses and some buildings in the neoclassical and liberty styles. Campidanese houses, built with raw mud bricks, still have basic elements like "Sa Lolla" (loggia with arches in the inner courtyard) and the imposing wooden entrance doors. Churches document the period from the eleventh to the eighteenth century and inside you will find interesting works of art.
There are numerous cultural and sports associations that enhance the local traditions through various folk and cultural events in all months of the year.
The recent discovery of the necropolis of Pill'e Mata, a few hundred meters from the town, on the one hand enriches the archaeological heritage of Sardinia, on the other raises expectations in the local community
