Evia is the second largest of the Greek islands and is served by a number of ferries from the mainland, as well as having a road bridge to the mainland at Chalkida. The ferry crossing from Agia Marina to Styra takes 45 minutes and Agia Marina itself is about a 50 minute drive from Athens airport. The ferry service operates throughout the year with several sailings every day. Evia has what to many people is a great advantage. it does not have an airport and has not therefore been overrun and spoilt by package tourism.
Zarakes is a traditional working Greek village with agriculture being the main occupation. It is situated mid way between the the islands east and west coasts, on both of which there is a selection of small fishing villages and sandy beaches for swimming. Half way from Zarakes to the west coast lies the once deserted valley which was home fpr old Zarakes and which is ideal for the cyclist and the walker. The village has a range of shops, a mini market as well as a taverna and coffee bars. There is also a daily bus service from Zarakes to Athens.
