- Transdanubia (West Hungary)
Western Hungary consists of 3 regions: West, Central and South Transdanubia
West Transdanubia is famous for its thermal springs and the baths in Balf, Sárvár and Bükfürdõ and the Gyõr Summer International Cultural Festival, location to international ballet and street-theatre.
Central Transdanubia is located just 40 km (25 miles) west of Budapest and north of Lake Balaton. The region is dominated by low hills and shallow lakes producing the full-bodied wines from Mór, Somló or Etyek.
Southern Transdanubia is bordered by the Danube and Drava. It is a region of forests and valleys. Hiking and horse-riding are popular local pursuits.
HOW TO GET THERE
To reach Western Hungary all year round it will require flying from a major European airport to the capital Budapest and arranging a transfer. It is possible to rent a car at the airport and drive in approximately 1.5-3 hours.
The distance between the airport and shores of Lake Balaton is approximately 18 kilometres (11 miles). For transferring to the resorts of Lake Balaton, transfer buses are available and their timetable is generally adapted to flight times. In addition, inexpensive taxi is also available.
