The Housing Market

Property prices in Provence are above the 'French average' – however, prices largely depend upon location. The most expensive departments are Bouches-du-Rhone (Marseille & Aix-en-Provence) & Var (Toulon). Both are located on the Mediterranean and therefore benefit from high overseas demand for ‘second homes’. Although more expensive, the rental market is very stable – returns average 8% per year. The department of Vaucluse (Avignon) is inland, north of Aix. It is becoming increasingly popular with foreign buyers – real estate consists mainly of large villas. Alpes-de-Haute-Provence (Digne-Les-Bains) offers the ‘best value for money’ – located due north of the Cote’ d’Azur, this department can still offer traditional stone farmhouses resting amongst the mountains and hills.
