Latvia Turns to Arts to Resurrect
Latvians today are seeking to re-establish their identity through the Arts and Riga's cultural institutions are looking to break out from the past. Today Riga's curators are planning the construction of a contemporary art museum, and Riga's opera company is widely acknowledged as one of the best in the former Eastern Bloc.

Social Issues Dominate Vote in Latvia
Social issues dominate the parliamentary vote in Latvia, the EU's poorest member. Since EU accession, Latvia with its 2.3 million citizens, has seen the most rapid growth in the EU as it catches up to older member states. Though last year, gross domestic product per capita (GDP)only reached 47 percent of the EU average. Those living outside the capital city Riga, complain the economic boom has left them behind. Polls are predicting the business friendly People's Party to take the lead in the election.

Baltic Container Project Revolutionizes Railway Traffic to the East
The Baltic-Transit project started in 2003 is currently providing a Baltic to Asia transport chain combining land, rail and sea transport. The project has been led by the Latvian railway 66% and the Estonian railway 30%. By the end 0f 2005, from the Baltic ports to Kazakhstan in Central Asia, the project already provided 76 routes for moving containers. During February, the meeting of railway leaders discussed enlargement of the project as well as the 2006 goal of moving cargo in the opposite direction from Asia to the Baltic Sea Coast.
