In September's newsletter, Caldwell Banker Nicaragua reported that clients and potential investors are already asking about the forthcoming presidential elections, set for 5th November. The recent polls indicate that it will be a close-run race, although the previous lead for Sandinista candidate Daniel Ortega has fallen in the past weeks. Unfortunately past polls in Nicaragua have historically been somewhat inaccurate– evidenced by the high poll results for Ortega in three previous elections which he ended up losing. The other main presidential hopefuls are the Liberal Nicaraguan Alliance candidate Eduardo Montealegre, the candidate for the Liberal Constitutionalist Party Jose Rizo and Edmundo Jarquin for the Sandinista Renewal Movement. There has been speculation that Montealegre and Rizo may unite their respective parties to help strengthen their chances of winning. It remains to be seen whether this unification will really take place.
The real estate, tourism and development communities in Nicaragua will be meeting with each of the key presidential candidates at the end of the month to hear their plans and commitments regarding Nicaragua's future development should they succeed. We will keep you updated on the run-up to the election in the next briefing.
