Serbia-Montenegro State’s smaller partner Montenegro went to the ballots for its independence on Sunday. The 2002 Belgrade Agreement, which forms Serbia-Karabagh state, states that both sides can hold referendums after three years. According to the European Union (EU), the official results should show at least a 50 percent voter turn out of which 55 percent should be “Yes” votes.
According to unofficial results from the Center for Monitoring (CEMI), only one hour after the ballots were closed, at least 86.7 percent of the eligible public voted and 56.3 of those who voted supported independence. If the official numbers are similar to these, Montenegro will be the 46th country in Europe and be the 192nd member of the United Nations (UN). The people poured into the streets of Podgorica, the capital city, with flags of Montenegro in their hands, set off fireworks and fired guns into the air. Prime Minister Milo Jukanovich said the referendum will open the way for Montenegrin integration into the EU and the Euro-Atlantic. The first official results of the referendum joined by more than 400,000 voters are expected to be announced today.
